Update Chrome

Always check the update.

A news site says your Chrome is too old and hands you an update file. Chrome updates itself, and never through some other website: that file is a program from a stranger.

1Where it livesIs it the real company's or person's own address or number?

google.com/chrome is Google's own page for Chrome.

lakesideherald.com is a local news site. It has nothing to do with Chrome, and someone has broken into it.

2What it asks you to doCheck firstDoes it want a password, a payment, a call, or a tap?

It offers Chrome from Google, and tells you Chrome already updates itself.

It wants you to download and run "Chrome_Update.exe" from a news site.

3How hard it pushesIs there a deadline, a threat, or a surprise charge?

No warning, no deadline.

You can't keep reading the story until you install it.

RememberBrowsers update themselves. Never install an "update" a website offers you. Check in your browser's menu, under Help, then About.
